The National Land Use Planning Commission was established to ensure effective planning and management of land use in Tanzania under the Land Use Planning Act, Cap. 116, which replaced the 1984 law in 2007.
The Commission is responsible for coordinating, advising, and overseeing land use planning across all sectors; supporting and monitoring land use planning authorities; and promoting sustainable, balanced, and beneficial use of land.
Its key roles include setting and harmonizing planning standards, coordinating institutions involved in land use planning, promoting public and private sector participation, enhancing cooperation among government bodies, advancing research and technology related to land management, maintaining land information systems and national data banks, reviewing relevant laws, fostering international cooperation, conducting public education and training programs, and ensuring the implementation of approved land use plans.
